No problem. Use your strikes. You get the picture. Here are some tried and tested strategies that have been used by the best dopers. The odds are still in your favour due to: inadequacies of the World Anti-Doping Agency and other national anti-doping agency investigative and testing protocols; the governance and structural difficulties the International Cycling Union UCI has with exercising power; and the added safety net of the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Recorded interviews are terrific for this. But vet the questions if you can, or write them yourself and get a mate to ask them see You may also want to rehearse your facial expressions and body language first — there are folks out there watching your every move. And you might want to get emotional too if you are able. If not, try 4 below. You will probably have to apologise a few times, so get creative with the forum and the approach see This one is very important. It makes you a bigger target and much harder to like.
No-one likes the unrepentant villain, unless of course you happen to also be attractive and charming — remember Jacques Anquetil anyone? This is a sure way to get your name and brand out there, because although most fans may hate doping, they love new cycling stuff even more see 6. The point being, cheating in sports is not going away any time soon, nor is it getting any easier to comprehend. To help explain, SB Nation spoke to Dr.
Stacy Sims, an environmental exercise physiologist and nutrition scientist at the University of Waikato in New Zealand. Stacy Sims: EPO is the hormone that is released in the kidney when you have a low partial pressure of oxygen. So the idea behind taking EPO is to increase that red blood cell production, because with increased red cells, you have increased oxygen carrying capacity, and increased oxygen delivery capacity. The idea behind lots of people using it is that it is a really fast way for red cell development.
So your hemoglobin and your hematocrit levels are tightly monitored. SS: It depends on when you test them. There are some anomalies. I would love to be able to have a clean team and really, as much as people say they are, you have your doubts.
But it is possible. It has an aspect of living in altitude, and having a high testosterone level. Then your body will compensate and produce more red cells just because it needs that for the oxygen, and the testosterone is a drive for producing EPO.
You can end up with some vascular disease. Drug use in cycling remains a serious issue. Another professional, also unnamed, put the figure at 20 percent. Instead, riders are skirting the edges of the anti-doping system, taking advantage of Therapeutic Use Exemptions, using overnight gaps in testing and a deep understanding of the Biological Passport to micro-dose without getting caught. It does not, however, provide much detail. Could the negative view of modern doping make clean riders believe that they must, once again, dope to win?
If that is the case, the effect of the report could be precisely the opposite of the one desired. In the first three years of the ABP, 26 riders were found positive for the presence of EPO stimulating agents in their specimens.
In 20 out of the 26 positive cases, it was the abnormal blood profile which raised suspicions leading to a targeted anti-doping urinary or blood test. Hamilton faced a lifetime ban from the sport after testing positive for a steroid in early Adding to the scandals of the mid s was the cocaine overdose of superstar Marco Pantani in , after which it was revealed that he raced using rEPO throughout his career.
Even with all of the previous drama, the biggest scandals were yet to come. First, a Spanish investigation in May found evidence of a major doping operation in Madrid. Police seized steroids, hormones, rEPO, frozen blood, and laboratory equipment. In all, 58 riders were implicated. Five were arrested, and nine riders, including favorites Ivan Basso and Jan Ullrich, were ousted from the Tour. American Floyd Landis, who was not involved in the initial scandal, went on to make an amazing comeback to win the Tour.
But he was later stripped of his title after it was revealed that he tested positive for testosterone from a sample taken during the Tour. Similarly, Alberto Contador had his Tour win vacated after being found guilty of doping.
By the end of the 20th century the sport almost seemed numb from the scandals, suspicions and accusations. First, there was an incident where a trace amount of corticoids was found in Armstrong.
It later turned out to have come from an externally-applied cream. Postal team. The charges date back to and included using, possessing and trafficking banned substances including EPO, blood transfusions and steroids. The Armstrong saga came to a head later in Armstrong came clean completely during a January interview with Oprah Winfrey where he admitted to using performance-enhancing drugs for much of his career, including all seven Tour de France wins.
Although he admitted the doping, Armstrong said he neither felt that it was wrong nor felt bad about what he was doing. The bad news continued to pile up on the sport that year.
During the summer of a French government commission revealed the results of retroactive sample analysis of the Tour de France. More than 25 riders had in fact tested positive for banned substances in that Tour.
Armstrong was hardly alone in his doping. The Armstrong revelations were damaging to the sport, but even more damaging was the withdrawal of many major sponsors due to the doping scandals.
The sponsors who remained drastically cut their team budgets. Some teams have implemented their own testing standards that are much more stringent than those of the UCI. Other teams have required riders to sign contracts agreeing to pay back previous earnings, if they are found doping. But even these steps have had apparently modest impact. These violations were not just limited to the Grand Tours.
Positive tests have been found in masters cycling, cyclo-cross, and mountain biking. Yet another form of doping seems to have now permeated cycling.
You need a thermal heat gun. You can use it in the race. It can see from meters away if there a difference in the heat in the bottom bracket.
